Home Insurance Payouts Hit Record £6,340 Average Claim in Q1 2026
Date: 6 May 2026 Source: Association of British Insurers (ABI)
UK home insurers paid out £846 million in property claims in the first three months of 2026, with the average household claim reaching a record £6,340 — up 20% on the same period last year. The latest figures from the Association of British Insurers show just how vital home insurance has become for households facing extreme weather and rising repair costs (ABI, 2026b).
Weather damage was the main driver behind the record payouts. The average home insurance claim for weather-related damage reached £6,040 in Q1 2026 — the highest first-quarter average ever recorded and 38% higher than the same period in 2025. Subsidence claims rose 9% to an average of £17,820 per household, while the average theft claim jumped 14% to £4,350 (ABI, 2026b).
The figures highlight why homeowners should review their cover, make sure their sums insured reflect current rebuild and contents values, and check that storm, flood and accidental damage protection is included.
